Why it’s on my list

Plastic litter boxes slowly get covered in tiny scratches, and those scratches hold onto bacteria and smells that washing can’t fully remove. That’s why most plastic boxes need replacing every year or so. A stainless steel box avoids that: the surface is non-porous, so urine smells can’t soak in, and it’s quick to wipe clean.

The high walls are the other big plus. If your cat is an enthusiastic digger or tends to pee against the side of the box, 9-inch walls keep the mess inside instead of on your floor and baseboards.

Key features

  • Stainless steel, non-porous surface that doesn’t absorb odors
  • 9.06-inch high walls against litter scatter and urine spray
  • Smooth surface, so clumps release easily when scooping
  • Size: 19.3 x 14.2 x 9.06 inches (about 49 x 36 x 23 cm)
  • Roomy enough for medium to large adult cats to turn around and dig

Good to know

  • The walls are high all the way around. That’s great for messy cats, but kittens, senior cats or cats with stiff joints may find a 9-inch step-in too high. For them, a box with a low entry is a better choice.
  • Stainless steel costs more upfront than plastic, but you won’t need to replace it every year.
  • Clean it with mild, unscented soap and water, the same as any litter box. (Here’s my full routine for how to clean a litter box.)

Best for

  • Cats who kick litter out or pee high
  • Medium to large adult cats
  • Owners tired of plastic boxes that start smelling no matter how often they’re cleaned
